Oamaru Stone

A natural material of New Zealand around 40 million years old!!!

Oamaru Stone is beautiful natural white sandstone, quarried from the East Coast of the South Island, near Oamaru.

The stone has formed from sand rolling around in the surf, and settling on the sea floor. Once gravity took hold and the sea-shore retrenched, this very ancient sandstone was exposed lining the coast.

Oamaru Stone is a very soft material to work with compared to wood. John enjoys it as a faster and different creative experience than sculpting wood.

Also, unlike the Kauri, stone carvings can be displayed outside amongst the elements. This offers John the opportunity to design and carve Garden Sculpture and teach individuals and groups in his Stone Carving Workshops.
